“這個人是男的還是女的？”每一個第一次聽卡森德拉唱歌的人都會這么問，那么這名年輕少女的嗓音到底渾厚到什么程度呢？有一個比喻也許是非常準確的：就像一只老牛把蹄子從泥地里拔出來發出的聲音。
卡森德拉有幸讓我們也感到了與一位天才生在一個時代的自豪。五年中發表了三張專輯，卡森德拉以她魔鬼的嗓子和音樂天生的超級駕駛力把90年代的爵士樂從蒼白呆板的摩天樓群拉回到帶著炊煙的林中小屋。
她第一首引起世界關注的就是翻唱比莉-赫莉戴的名曲《神奇的果實》。卡森德拉讓人吃驚的是她不但堅持自己創作，還堅持每次錄制新專輯都更新一批樂手，這樣做的目的是對音樂的氣質作不同的抽測。她這種一直前進的姿態讓人們再也沒有理由去懷疑她作為一名最優秀的爵士藝術家的資本。
Cassandra Wilson 生于密西西比的杰克遜市，家傳武功 ――― 她父親是個爵士吉他和貝斯手。母親是一位教師，和Wilson的祖母一樣都是個性鮮明和充滿活力，是她精神上的榜樣。97年Wilson被采訪的時候仍然提起她祖母的剛毅性格，忠誠的信仰和在教堂里自由的放聲歌唱 ―― “我來著我身后那無數的桀驁不遜的女性之中”―― 她對《女性》雜志說。
父母在家里頗是收藏了好多音樂，讓Wilson一生受益。有老爸教導，她6歲開始彈吉他，音樂的天分讓她12歲就創作出來她的第一首吉他曲。大學畢業以后，她加入了布魯斯的演奏陣營，后徹底投靠爵士。80年代開始，Wilson到紐約發展，受M-Base運動的影響，大量嘗試了將爵士容納Funk，HipHop，搖滾等等風格。在M-Base組織的兩大藝人 Steve Coleman 和 Jean-Paul Bourelly的合作之下，1989年她在JMT錄下了她第一張專輯《Blue Skies》，一舉奪下當年爵士專輯銷量榜首！93年Wilson到BlueNote唱片公司開創新發展。按《紐約》雜志的說法：“如此鋌而走險地投奔展現黑人音樂本色的音樂表現之中，可謂經典的‘先鋒派’做法！”。在Craig Street的支持下，她錄制了使她成名的名作《Blue Light ‘Til Dawn》―― 一張對布魯斯和民謠的全新詮譯。《New Moon Daughter》是她1996年在Blue Note出品的她最著名的專輯。1996年獲得葛萊美最佳爵士女聲大獎，DownBeat大獎，同時在當年的《紐約時報》上被評為“十年來的最佳爵士人聲專輯”，《時代周刊》譽之為“最佳唱片”。從此奠定她新一代爵士女皇的身份，“她是 Billie Holiday 和 Dinah Washington的再生，帶著藍調風格的流行音符之中，頑皮的爵士感受交織著令你意想不到的音樂類型，懶洋洋的淳厚的歌聲把聽眾牢牢凝固在彌漫著的她性感的聲音中。”（樂評家Sene Santoro）。正如《時代周刊》所言：“她是她這一代樂人中最成熟的歌手。。。是美國當代最重要的歌手，也是勿容置疑最受歡迎的歌手”。
